The flight to Amsterdam was pleasant enough for a guy who has a hard time sitting still for long periods of time and a woman fearful of flying. We both watched movies, tv, and played some games. We each slept about 1 1/2 hours. They serve a heck of a lot of food- dinner, snacks, lunch, and breakfast – all before 11pm PST.
Best part of flight was watching the sunrise over Scotland.

We just had a quick layover in Amsterdam. Strange airport! I’ve been so excited about seeing it but due to construction and our general confusion and rush- it wasn’t as fun as I had hoped as we did not get to explore. Yet the views from the plane were breathtaking so I’d love to visit again and have more time.
We had to be at our gate two hours prior to departure. This had us a bit crazed as I’m used to the standard hour in the States.
Lesson #1 learned! Never assume things are the same everywhere you travel.
No time to nap in a nap bed or have some coffee and pastries.
As a general rule I’m fascinated by international bathrooms and this was no exception. They had a toilet cleaner that dispensed after flushes and individual very private, yet very tiny, rooms. Tiny.
There is a security check before each gate. We didn’t expect that line! Lesson #2. Always plan plenty of time.
Amsterdam airport security seems to be stricter or catch more things than PDX. They also go through bags if in doubt. Good for safety- not good for the way I packed. Nothing bad but perhaps would have been a bit better about packing if I knew my overnight clothes wouldn’t be on display in the middle of a room full of strangers.
Someone sneezed in line and I started to say my standard “Bless You”. But then I realized, what if that’s an insult or offensive? Something to ask Dad or look up in an international etiquette book if there is such a thing.

All is well, already learning lessons and we are about to take our mandatory second dose of malaria meds. Hope to have internet in Kenya! We will be in Nairobi for a couple of days before heading to Mt. Kenya and then to Maua!

Thanks for the update! Love you! Mom

Thanks for the updates!! Neat that you flew over Greenland and were you able to see a lot of ice like the graphic shows? Looks like you got a seat just behind the wing, I try to get seats either in front or behind the wings as well as that’s supposed to be the most stable place to be on a plane as far as motion. Neat following your adventure along the way!!!! Love you!
