I’m not a poet. I wish I was a poet because poems are shorter than stories, and much more to the point. With that said however, I decided to write a poem for my sister Trish on her birthday (April 30th). So Trish, here you go. Happy Birthday. I love you. And no- poems don’t have to rhyme.

My beautiful sister Trish.

For my Oldest Sister

I hope you know…
And I hope you hear…
Cause I’m trying to be clear…
About how I admire you so,
as we’ve watched each other grow.

You from young protector with no fear,
to older teen who was only mean
to shield from the unseen.
On to young adult with mountains to climb…
to a new mother with so many lessons to learn and so much love to give.

You let go of the pain,
cause you had so much to gain.

You have taught me how to give,
which only allows me to live.
You’ve taught me about fashion, cooking, love, and friendship.
Both the good and the hard.

You’ve always seemed so knowing,
even as you were still seeking.

You are braver than you even know.
You’ve had loss…
heartbreak…and so much more.
Yet you kept breathing…and loving…
and teaching…and growing.

So thank you dear one, for all you’ve given me.
I’m proud to share this branch on our family tree.
