Today I’m grateful for my father-in-law, Ken. Today is his birthday so I’m feeling especially grateful for him.

I’ve known Ken since I was sixteen years old. Tim and I are lucky in many ways because our parents have seen us both grow. Since I’ve known Ken for more than half of my life, I feel a genuine love and can be myself around him.

Ken is always so willing to help us whenever we need him. Not only is he willing, but he’s talented at so many things. Just in this past weekend he helped us fix a garage door, install a kitchen faucet, helped us move in a heavy piece of furniture, installed blinds, built an accessible ramp for Riley, and gave us a lot of tips on things we can do around the house. But more than that, I know Ken would do whatever it takes to protect or care for us. That’s an amazing secure feeling and one I deeply value.

Ken isn’t someone to treat himself to things but he’s someone who will go to the ends of the earth for others. I’ve only seen him angry once and that was out of protectiveness over those he loves.

Happy Birthday Ken! I know you don’t have Internet so I will make sure I tell you again and again in person how grateful I am for you. Thank you for you.
